Metaverse marketing: How will it affect social media marketing?
While Facebook is now known as Meta, the metaverse is not part of the Facebook brand. The metaverse is the next “big” thing in the digital world which is already being utilized by big companies like Gucci who are teaming up with some of their biggest contenders.
What is the metaverse?
The metaverse involves a shared online virtual space where users are there in a “virtual” way. While users are on social media virtually now, the metaverse consumers are in the online space but as avatars!
The biggest notion to remember is that the metaverse is not a new concept, but Facebook's rebranding to the “meta” has changed digital interactions. The metaverse can also be known as Augmented and Virtual Reality.
Who was Meta before Meta was Meta? Roblox is a great example!
How does this affect marketing?
Ecommerce
The ecommerce industry has continued to see a skyrocketing amount of growth over the last two years, and as the metaverse continues to provide new experiences, even the most well-known brands are joining the conversation.
2020 and 2021 paved the way for social commerce to rise in popularity, and with all of us purchasing products from Instagram or TikTok, something to keep in mind is information regarding Meta releasing its own commerce platform.
Facebook and Instagram are where a large majority of social commerce is held, and as VR and AR continue to rise with the metaverse, this is where this type of commerce will come from.
A great example of this is Pinterest's current ability to try on products and shop based on images. As Pinterest gains popularity in social commerce, will the metaverse marketing for commerce look similar?
Nike is currently filing patents for virtual consumer goods that would leave all rights to their company if the metaverse is to take off as it is projected to. Yes, virtual sneakers and products are to be sold and will be worn by the “avatars” of each different consumer.
How will you find the latest Nike metaverse shoes? Through SEO? Through elsewhere?
SEO and metaverse
While traditional SEO might not be the exact same for brands in the metaverse, metaverse marketing is all about imagery, which is part of SEO now! Image search results hold a smaller percentage of the search results than traditional results, but this could be different in the metaverse.
As Google’s SERP continues to evolve, and videos, images, and products show up more and more, SEO in the metaverse could be sooner than one realizes.
Will everything need to have “meta” included in the name? If you are serving local Italian cuisine, do you need to worry about having search and virtual experiences? As image search results are an important part now, will SERP itself transform?
